Choosing Purpose Over Permission
There comes a point in every leader’s journey when the familiar script no longer fits. For Cutressa M. Williams Carter, that moment arrived the day she stopped seeking permission to lead and instead chose to live her calling with intention. What began as a quiet inner conviction evolved into a purpose-driven movement that fuels her work serving executives, founders, and teams in transforming the way they lead, communicate, create, and grow. Her’s is the story of a leader who aligned profit with purpose and, in so doing, shaped her own path and the paths of those she empowers.
From Fairfield to the World
Cutressa’s journey began in Fairfield, Alabama, a small suburb outside Birmingham where she spent her early years with her grandmother while her mother established a stronger foundation for their family in Los Angeles. Those formative years were filled with warmth, curiosity, and adventure, giving her an early understanding of resilience and independence.
Beginning at age ten, she spent alternating years between Alabama and California, experiencing two distinct cultures that broadened her sense of possibility. By the time she stood at the top of her childhood staircase declaring she would one day see Europe, she had already developed the vision and confidence that would shape her adult life.
That childhood promise soon came true. After her freshman year of college, she boarded her first international flight to Munich and spent the summer studying in a converted monastery atop a mountain in Salzburg, Austria. Later, she continued her studies at Keble College through the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Oxford, even celebrating her birthday in Paris. These experiences expanded her worldview and planted the seeds of global awareness that now influence her leadership style.
Leadership Forged Through Experience
Before founding Catalyst Collective, Cutressa spent more than two decades strengthening organizations across corporate, nonprofit, academic, and community environments. This wide-ranging experience shaped the versatility that defines her leadership philosophy today. She led, trained, and mentored teams of up to eighty people, earning a reputation for creating cultures of collaboration, high engagement, and human-centered excellence.
Her corporate and organizational work spanned customer success, experience design, communication strategy, retention, training, curriculum development, sales development, and process improvement. She consistently served as the bridge between executives, teams, and clients, known for her clarity, diplomacy, and ability to navigate complex dynamics with grace. She also embraced roles requiring significant adaptability, working across industries, guiding teams through change, and encouraging others to adopt a growth mindset.
Writing and storytelling became another hallmark of her leadership. She developed messaging that connected people to purpose, possibility, and progress, reinforcing a truth that eventually shaped her future: success without service felt incomplete. She wanted her work to create meaningful and measurable impact. That desire became the spark for what came next.
Catalyst Collective in Motion
Today, Cutressa is the Founder and CEO of Catalyst Collective LLC, a consulting and workshop firm built on the belief that people drive progress, alignment creates momentum, and service fuels sustainable success. Her mission is to empower organizations to grow with intention while empowering teams to think like partners in the vision rather than participants in a process.
Her work centers on two signature methodologies. The first, Economic Partnership, leads executives and teams in cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset and corresponding actions within the organization – for the benefit of all: the company, each team member, the clients/customers, and vendors alike. It teaches employees how their roles influence economic stability, cultural well-being, and long-term success, reframing engagement as a shared value, not an isolated initiative. The second, Purposeful Profit$, supports entrepreneurs, founders, and nonprofit leaders who want to build organizations where mission and margin move together. It guides leaders in strengthening systems, clarifying value, and establishing sustainable pathways to growth.
These philosophies live in her consulting practice and in her writing. Her widely followed 1% Frequency series reflects her commitment to daily discipline, clarity, and intentional leadership. Through reflections on courage, aspiration, language, connection, and human-centered decision-making, she invites leaders to grow one purposeful percent at a time. Catalyst Collective is the culmination of her life experiences and service-first philosophy. It is both the continuation of her journey and a platform for empowering others in amplifying theirs.
A Vision Focused on People and Purpose
As a leader with a global perspective and a deeply human-centered approach, Cutressa is committed to elevating how organizations develop people, shape culture, and pursue meaningful progress. She sees the future of work as a partnership between talent and leadership and believes organizations flourish when clarity, trust, and aligned action guide their decisions.
Her vision includes expanding Catalyst Collective’s signature frameworks, developing new training experiences, publishing thought leadership, and launching her upcoming magazine and podcast to continue conversations about Purposeful Profit$, Economic Partnership, and people-first innovation. She is also passionate about building ecosystems that allow entrepreneurs and communities to circulate value and create shared prosperity. For her, leadership is not simply about direction. It is about contribution, elevation, and impact.
A Leader Who Embodies Her Message
