For over a decade, Alisa Rose has been a student of the female form in motion. As the founder of Art Fitness, a boutique studio in Wilmington, Delaware, she spent fifteen years observing how women move, how they struggle with their bodies, and—crucially—how their clothing consistently fails them. Today, as the Founder and CEO of SISU, she is leveraging those insights to lead a fashion revolution aimed at the “nonstandard” woman.
From Motion to Materials: The Genesis of SISU
The transition from fitness to fashion was not a pivot of convenience, but one of necessity. Rose’s corporate background provided the foundation, but her time as an entrepreneur taught her the power of transformation. She realized that the fashion industry largely designed for a narrow, standard definition of the female body, leaving a vast population of women in “in-between” sizes feeling invisible.
“SISU was born out of frustration, personal experience, and a desire to create something better for women who constantly felt overlooked,” Rose explains.
To ensure her vision was rooted in reality rather than theory, Rose conducted extensive research, including focus groups with over 1,500 women. This process validated a deep-seated need for apparel that honors the “in-between,” providing a bridge between standard retail and custom tailoring.
The SISU Philosophy: Fabric, Form, and Function
In a market saturated with “fast fashion,” SISU differentiates itself through Intentional Design. Rose has built the brand around three core pillars:
- Fabric: Investing significant time into testing materials that offer both luxury and the flexibility required for real life.
- Form: Focusing on the nonstandard, in-between size range that traditional fit standards ignore.
- Function: Integrating thoughtful details such as precise tailoring, interchangeable designs, and pockets.
Rose’s goal is to move beyond the “photoshoot” aesthetic. Her garments are designed to move with a woman from a leadership meeting to a community event, ensuring that style never comes at the cost of comfort or flexibility.
Leading with Perseverance
The name “Sisu”, a Finnish concept representing extraordinary determination, is not just a brand name; it is a reflection of Rose’s own leadership journey. As an African American woman founder entering the fashion world independently, she has navigated systemic hurdles ranging from limited funding to manufacturing complexities.
Lessons in Resilience
- Strategy Over Passion: Rose learned that while passion ignites a brand, only strategy and systems sustain it.
- The Power of the Step Back: She famously paused to reevaluate her business, moving from a model of “short-term survival” to one of “long-term growth”.
- Adaptive Leadership: For Rose, resilience is the ability to adapt and move forward with increased clarity after a setback.
A Legacy of Visibility and Equity
Looking toward 2026 and beyond, Alisa Rose is building more than a wardrobe; she is building a platform for impact. Through the Infinity Initiative Fund, SISU provides economic opportunities and support for other women pursuing their purposes.
Her long-term vision is to establish SISU as a global leader that redefines how women experience confidence. By championing inclusivity and creating pathways for emerging entrepreneurs of color, Rose is ensuring that her legacy is defined by courage, innovation, and the end of the compromised fit.
“I want women to stop choosing between style and comfort,” says Rose. “Instead, they can focus on showing up as their best selves and walking in the purpose they were created for”.
