Dr. JoAnn Ajayi-Scott was born JoAnn Wilson in Ocilla, Georgia. Her childhood was shaped by strong family values, deep faith, and the powerful lessons that come from growing up in a close-knit community. She and her twin sister, Margie, spent their summers with their grandmother, helping family members with long days working in the tobacco fields. She reminded herself daily, “Don’t quit.” That phrase would become a recurring theme in her life, especially during the more than ten years she spent pursuing her doctoral degree. In 1989, Dr. Ajayi-Scott founded Essence of a Lady, Inc. with twenty-three women who believed in the power of giving back. What began as a small social and charitable initiative evolved into a comprehensive leadership and mentoring organization that educates, guides, and empowers youth and women across multiple states.
Today, Essence of a Lady includes research-based mentoring models that serve girls and boys, group mentorship experiences, college and career readiness programs, scholarship opportunities, financial literacy training, and platforms for personal and professional development. Through her leadership, more than one thousand youth have received mentorship, academic support, and leadership training. More than four hundred women and twenty-five men have contributed their time, talent, and resources to support the organization’s mission. Graduating seniors have received more than twenty-five thousand dollars in scholarships.
Her signature programs, including Young Essence Ladies…Learning, Young Men Empowered, the E’Ladies Network, the E’Men’s Network, and the Fabulous Female Movement, serve girls, boys, women, and community partners. These programs offer both mentorship and opportunities for personal growth, media visibility, business development, and financial empowerment.
Essence of a Lady has also been recognized for its strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The organization ensures all youth have access to programs regardless of financial ability, background, or circumstance. Pride, opportunity, and belonging are woven into every initiative.

She is also strengthening her media platforms, philanthropic networks, and mentoring programs to ensure that youth and women have access to the tools and resources needed to transform their financial futures.
