Cultivating the Garden: How Christopher McCormick Redefines Leadership Through Trust, Growth, and Belonging

About

Who is Christopher McCormick?

Christopher McCormick is a visionary, human-centered leadership strategist, HR executive, and founder of Visionary Consulting. With more than 20 years of experience across Fortune 100 companies, he is known for helping organizations build cultures rooted in trust, belonging, and psychological safety. Christopher partners with executive teams and boards to align talent strategy, leadership development, and organizational health—believing that when people are empowered to flourish, sustainable performance naturally follows.

Leadership Begins Where Safety Exists

Christopher McCormick believes leadership begins long before strategy meetings, org charts, or quarterly goals. It begins in the quiet assurance that people feel safe enough to speak, contribute, and grow.

In his reflective essay, Leadership in the Garden of the Soul, McCormick compares leadership to tending a garden—an idea inspired by memories of his grandmother. She understood that growth could not be rushed, forced, or controlled. It required patience, care, and trust in the process. Years later, that same metaphor guides McCormick’s approach to leadership: when leaders create the right conditions, people flourish naturally.

Across more than two decades as a human resources executive, advisor, and founder, McCormick has built a career centered on one core belief—organizations thrive when their people do. His work spans Fortune 100 companies, global enterprises, and emerging leaders, all united by a human-centric approach to performance, engagement, and culture.

Christopher McCormick, CEO and Founder of Visionary Consulting, is known for redefining leadership through trust, belonging, and human-centered strategy.

Foundation: Early Influences and the Making of a Human-Centric Leader

McCormick’s professional foundation is as unconventional as it is formative. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from Webster University, an education that sharpened his understanding of human emotion, communication, and presence. Long before he entered boardrooms, he learned how people express themselves, how trust is built, and how stories move individuals to action.

Those early lessons were reinforced through executive leadership development. McCormick advised the Building Innovative Leaders program in partnership with Stanford University Executive Education and later designed the Growing Innovative Leaders program in collaboration with National Taiwan University’s EMBA School. These experiences deepened his global perspective and strengthened his ability to bridge innovation, leadership, and human behavior.

Yet his most profound leadership lesson came from family. Reflecting on the influence of his grandmother, McCormick has shared that empathy and resilience are not leadership accessories—they are leadership essentials. That realization reshaped how he approached human resources, moving him beyond compliance and process into purpose and care.

Ascent: A Career Built on Trust, Scale, and Transformation

McCormick’s ascent through leadership is marked by increasing scope, complexity, and influence. He spent over 20 years in senior HR and talent leadership roles across some of the world’s most respected organizations, including Bank of America, Starbucks Coffee Company, HP Inc., Blue Shield of California, and Gilead Sciences.

At Bank of America, where he built an impressive 15-year career, McCormick led large-scale transformation initiatives, global onboarding programs, and enterprise learning strategies. He managed multi-million-dollar budgets and teams numbering in the hundreds, gaining firsthand insight into how change affects people at scale.

At Starbucks, he worked in global talent development, partnering with leaders to align learning and organizational capability with business outcomes. That work set the stage for his senior leadership roles at HP Inc., where he served as Global Head of Talent, Learning & Diversity across Personal Systems, 3D Print, and HP Labs—multi-billion-dollar businesses operating on a global stage.

With more than two decades of experience across Fortune 100 organizations, McCormick has served as a trusted advisor to executive teams navigating transformation at scale.

A former HP executive described McCormick’s impact this way:
“Christopher by training and temperament has deep insights about human motivation and development… a trustworthy and valuable confidante… able to unlock the potential of teams.”Louis Kim, Former VP AI, HP

McCormick later brought that same clarity and credibility to Blue Shield of California, guiding organizational transformations, and to Gilead Sciences, where he served as Senior Director of Talent, Development and Inclusion. There, he defined enterprise TD&I capabilities, frameworks, and methodologies to support organizational health, team development, coaching, and cultural aspiration.

Impact: Recognition, Engagement, and Cultures That Flourish

Today, McCormick is the CEO and Founder of Visionary Consulting, where he advises executive leadership teams on HR strategy, leadership development, coaching, and change management. His work focuses on creating inclusive, high-trust environments where engagement and performance reinforce one another.

Central to his philosophy is gratitude and recognition. In The Irony of Gratitude, McCormick reflects on how appreciation transforms teams—not as a program, but as a practice.
“Recognizing both individual and collective contributions fosters a culture of belonging, where employees feel valued and motivated to give their best.”

His ability to teach, coach, and develop others is consistently echoed by peers:
“Not many HR partners are as committed to teaching, coaching, and developing people as Christopher… extremely collaborative and great to work with.”Ricardo Silva Filho, Vice President
Another colleague noted his rare ability to inspire growth:
“Christopher’s focus on increasing the capabilities of others is second to none… I would recommend him to any company looking to develop talent with passion and purpose.”Scott Bockheim

McCormick’s influence extends beyond organizations into thought leadership and academia. He is a frequent lecturer at Golden Gate University, a certified NeuroLeadership Institute Facilitator, a Six Sigma Green Belt, and a Senior Professional Career Coach (SPCC). He is also a keynote speaker, panel expert, and published author on topics ranging from employee resource groups to inclusive leadership.

Vision for the Future: Human First, Always

McCormick’s vision is clear:
Empowering people and organizations to navigate the future with purpose, grace, and ease.

His mission is equally grounded:
Creating space for growth, development, and flourishing.

In Legacy: Planting for the Future, he emphasizes that leaders must invest in learning, mentorship, and development if they hope to retain talent and build enduring organizations. For McCormick, leadership is not about control—it is about care.

A quote that continues to guide him comes from Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods:
“Sometimes people leave you… You decide alone. But no one is alone.”

It reflects his belief that even in moments of uncertainty, leadership means ensuring people know they are supported.

Looking ahead, McCormick continues to champion leadership rooted in empathy, growth, and purpose—where people are empowered to flourish.

For executives and future leaders alike, his message is simple—and profound:
Create the conditions. Tend the garden. Let people flourish.
