Straight Talk, Stronger Foundations: How Megan Buntine is Reimagining Leadership for Good

Running a for-purpose organization without a robust framework is, in Megan Buntine’s estimation, akin to building a house on shifting sands. You can pour your heart into the mission, but without a solid foundation, the structure eventually sinks. Risk enters the cracks, talent burns out, and compliance becomes a debilitating headache.

For over 30 years, Megan has served as the architect who stabilizes these foundations. As the founder of MJB Consulting, she has moved beyond the “red tape” traditionally associated with governance, reframing it as the essential backbone that allows an organization’s mission to thrive. Her approach is a rare blend of high-level strategic oversight and a deeply human understanding of the people behind the titles.

A Psychological Lens on Leadership

Megan’s journey began at the University of Melbourne, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. This early academic focus provided her with a critical lens that many in the governance space lack: an understanding of human behavior, motivation, and the internal barriers to success.

Her early career was forged in the demanding environment of the Victorian Department of Human Services. It was here that she witnessed firsthand the “domino effect” of poor governance. When roles were unclear and decision-making was inconsistent, the weight—and the risk—fell disproportionately on the shoulders of individual leaders. This era shaped her conviction that governance isn’t a bureaucratic add-on; it is core business.

From Public Service to Independent Catalyst

In 2011, after decades of navigating high-stakes decisions and leading complex teams within government, Megan recognized a significant gap in the market. Many for-purpose organizations were desperate for guidance but found traditional governance advice either prohibitively expensive or buried in inaccessible jargon.

She launched Megan J Buntine Consulting Services with a clear mission: to provide “straight-talking” advice that moves organizations from survival to strategy. Since then, she has worked with thousands of leaders across Australia and New Zealand, serving as a Board Advisor, Executive Coach, and Governance Specialist.

Her ascent has been defined by a commitment to “future-proofing” organizations. Whether serving as an Independent Non-Executive Director for Morcare Services or as the Chair of the Finance Audit and Risk Committee for Alexandra District Health, Megan has consistently turned governance into a catalyst for positive change. She doesn’t just fix systems; she builds the leadership capability required to sustain them.

Reframing Vulnerability and Growth

One of Megan’s most profound contributions to the sector is her work in humanizing the executive experience. She recognizes that even the most accomplished leaders carry a “modicum of self-doubt,” particularly when stepping into new roles. Rather than viewing this as a deficit, she invites a radical reframe.

“I try to encourage people to reframe those feelings that we might otherwise label as Imposter Syndrome as simply a sign of growth. Indicators that we are exploring, and growing into, new areas of capability.”

This philosophy of “honesty and vulnerability” allows Megan to get to the crux of organizational issues quickly. By stripping away the pressure of perfectionism, she creates a safe space for Chairs and Executives to lead authentically. Her impact is perhaps most visible when she steps away: she measures success by an organization’s ability to use the systems she built—such as board succession planning or risk management frameworks—independently and effectively long after her consultancy ends.

A Legacy of Practical Excellence

As the not-for-profit sector continues to grow—now employing over 10% of the Australian workforce—Megan’s vision is more critical than ever. She is focused on ensuring that “organisations for good” are not just well-intentioned, but well-governed and future-fit.

Her legacy is one of accessibility. Megan works tirelessly to break down the mystique of governance, making it palatable and actionable for those on the front lines of social change. For the next generation of leaders, especially women driving systemic change, her advice is as practical as her consultancy:

“Believe in yourself, even when you feel uncertain or out of your depth. Lean into the vulnerability and seek out the people who can help you, as none of us know everything, and you shouldn’t feel like you have to.”

Through MJB Consulting, Megan Buntine continues to prove that when the backbone of an organization is strong, there is no limit to the impact it can achieve.

Editorial Note

Megan Buntine’s journey reminds us that the strongest organizations are built on a blend of rigorous structure and radical honesty. If your organization is ready to move from survival to strategy, consider how strengthening your governance can unlock your true potential.
